75th Anniversary Symposium of the Japan Society of International Economics

Theme

“Progress of International Economics in the First Half of the 21st Century”

Purpose

The JSIE celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2000. In the past quarter century from 2000, we have witnessed tremendous progress in the research in international economics. In the field of international trade, notable advancements have been achieved through empirical studies utilizing microdata since the late 1990s and trade models incorporating firm heterogeneity since the early 2000s. In the field of international finance, significant progress has been made in research on foreign exchange rates and open macroeconomics in conjunction with the globalization of financial markets. In the real world, on the other hand, China joined the WTO in 2001, and since then imports from China substantially increased in many developed countries including the United States. Moreover, the Global Financial Crisis in 2008-09 caused large-scale fluctuations in asset prices in the world, affecting the economies of not only the United States but also many other countries around the world. Until around 2016, international trade and investment have been largely liberalized through the formation of regional trade agreements, and economic globalization has progressed. However, globalization seems to have lost its momentum since the trade war between the United States and China emerged and Brexit occurred. Economic security and trade controls have recently become important issues in many countries including Japan. Motivated by such advancements of international economics and many important events in the world economy during the first quarter century in the 21st century, this symposium aims to look back on the progress of research in international economics over the past quarter century and look ahead to how international economics will further develop and what changes are required in the next quarter century until 2050, when the JSIE will celebrate its 100th anniversary.
